Abstract
Aims: This study aims to reinterpret and articulate the concept of urban vitality in light of the monotheistic worldview (Tawhid). While global literature regards urban vitality as a fundamental component of urban environmental quality, there has been limited effort in domestic research to interpret this concept through a monotheistic lens. Moreover, Tawhid has often been employed as a normative and prescriptive principle, rather than as a theoretical framework for understanding and redefining urban development concepts. However, Tawhid—as an epistemological and ontological system—has the potential to reframe, organize, and give new direction to many existing indicators.
Methods: Accordingly, through a qualitative content analysis method, studies related to the Islamic city and urban vitality were reviewed, and indicators from both domains were extracted and compared.
Findings: The findings indicate that Islamic teachings related to health, security, justice, beauty, cooperation, enjoying blessings, avoiding extravagance, public participation, the role of the mosque, respect for cultural diversity, and poverty alleviation offer rich capacities for reinterpreting the components of urban vitality.
Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that global concepts of vitality can be reinterpreted and localized based on monotheistic foundations. This approach can lead not only to enhancing the livability of urban environments, but also to strengthening the human connection with meaning, existence, and society.
