Introduction: Neglecting children’s needs in urban design can reduce the quality of their experience of public spaces. The Mobarakabad–Hosseinabad Neighborhood faces challenges related to safety, accessibility, and environmental quality, highlighting the need for an assessment based on Child-Friendly City indicators.
Aims: This study aims to assess the quality of space in the neighborhood from the perspective of children’s perceptions, with an emphasis on their active participation in the urban design process.
Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods and participatory approach. The study included children aged 7–11 years who participated voluntarily. Data were collected through participatory workshops and questionnaires. Qualitative data obtained from the participatory workshops, children’s drawings, and models were analyzed using MAXQDA, while quantitative questionnaire data were analyzed using SPSS. Finally, the findings were translated into urban design proposals.
Findings: This study employed a mixed-methods and participatory approach. The target population consisted of children aged 7–11 years who participated voluntarily in the study. Data were collected through participatory workshops and supplementary questionnaires. Qualitative data obtained from the participatory workshops, children’s drawings, and models were analyzed using MAXQDA, while quantitative questionnaire data were analyzed using SPSS. Finally, the qualitative and quantitative findings were translated into urban design proposals.
Conclusion: The findings indicate that meaningful participation of children can reveal latent environmental needs and provide a scientific basis for improving the quality of urban spaces. Strengthening safe routes, expanding green spaces, and institutionalizing children’s participation are among the key strategies proposed by the study.
