This study was conducted to explain the role of digital technologies in enhancing the quality of life of older adults in urban public spaces. It focuses on how technology-based interventions can be purposefully applied in public spaces based on a proper understanding of older adults’ actual behaviors and needs.
Methods: In terms of purpose, this research is applied, and in terms of method, it adopts a mixed-methods approach.Data were collected through semi-structured interviews, questionnaires, and behavioral mapping. Qualitative data were analyzed using thematic analysis, while patterns of movement, stopping, activity, and interaction among older adults were examined in the observational section. In addition, questionnaire data were analyzed using descriptive statistics to support the interpretation of the findings.
Findings: The findings showed that the quality of older adults’ presence in public spaces depends on factors such as accessibility, environmental safety, spatial legibility, diversity of land uses, quality of urban furniture, and opportunities for social interaction. Behavioral mapping also showed that high-traffic routes, stopping points, and gathering spaces are the main areas for the deployment of digital technologies. In addition, digital accessibility, education and empowerment, security and trust, age-friendly design, and smart management were identified as the key influencing dimensions.
Conclusion: the smartization of public spaces can improve the quality of life of older adults only when it is based on behavioral evidence and environmental characteristics. The integration of thematic analysis and behavioral mapping provides a practical framework for identifying smartization priorities and for designing age-friendly public spaces based on field evidence
